What it is

What it is

Birmingham Men’s Health Physiotherapy is one of the few specialist Men's Health  physiotherapy clinics in the UK offering Focused Shockwave Therapy as part of a comprehensive approach to treating erectile dysfunction.

Gerard Greene has undertaken extensive training in this specialist treatment and works closely with leading international experts to ensure patients receive the latest evidence-based care. Focused Shockwave Therapy is not suitable for everyone, which is why every patient undergoes a detailed assessment to determine whether it is the right treatment for their individual type of erectile dysfunction.

Our aim is to combine the most appropriate treatments with expert clinical assessment, giving every patient a personalised rehabilitation programme rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

How we assess & treat

How we help

After assessing whether shockwave is right for you, we apply a small handpiece to the treatment area; it delivers gentle pulses that most men find very tolerable — a light tapping sensation rather than anything painful. A typical session takes around 15–20 minutes, and you can drive and return to normal activity immediately afterwards.

Shockwave works best as part of a bigger picture, so we usually combine it with pelvic floor rehabilitation and lifestyle guidance for the strongest, most lasting result — treating the whole problem, not just one part of it.

What to expect

What your journey looks like

Shockwave is delivered as a short course, and benefits typically build gradually over the weeks that follow. Here’s the usual shape:

  1. A suitability assessment. We check whether shockwave is likely to help your particular problem, and explain what to expect.
  2. A course of short sessions. Treatment is spread over several weeks, each session quick and comfortable, with no downtime.
  3. Building results. Improvements tend to develop in the weeks after treatment, and we review your progress and combine care for the best outcome.
Straight answers

The questions men actually ask

Does focused shockwave therapy hurt?

Most men feel nothing but occasionally a light tapping or vibration sensation. There’s no recovery time needed and you can get straight on with your day.

Is it actually proven to work?

For erectile dysfunction with a physical (vascular) cause, focused shockwave has a growing and encouraging evidence base. It isn’t right for everyone, which is why we assess suitability honestly before recommending it.

How many sessions will I need?

It’s delivered as a short course, usually spread over several weeks. We’ll give you a clear idea of the likely number after your assessment, based on what we’re treating.

Will I notice results straight away?

Usually not immediately — the benefits of shockwave tend to build over the weeks following treatment as new blood flow and tissue repair develop. We track your progress along the way.
